Building and installing Guitar and Amp Kits Building and installing Guitar and Amp Kits

Help tuning up your new kit guitar

Tools:

We offer a very wide range of kits for electric guitars, and vacuum tube amplifiers, as well as kits to make complete guitars and amps.(more kits than anyone else in the world)

In general, you need to have some tools in order to complete any project of this kind. Simple tools are all that are required, but quality tools always make a project go faster and produce much better results.

Simple guitar modification kits, such as a Super Midrange or Varitone kit require a soldering iron and rosin core solder. But besides the soldering equipment, you will need to be able to take the guitar apart to some degree, usually requiring phillips or straight screwdrivers, and then put it back together.

Installation of control pots will require a wrench to loosen and tighten the bolts (3/8" and 5/16" are most common).

BUILDING A COMPLETE GUITAR KIT.

These are commercial kits and are very well made, but some tools and skills are always necessary in order to complete construction of a guitar.

It is necessary to have a hand drill and bits to be able to enlarge or drill any holes missing or needed to complete the project.

Since this is a woodworking project, sandpaper, a chisel or knife, screwdrivers, a drill and other woodworking hand tools (scrapers, files) should be available if you want to fit things together neatly, and make a good guitar.

The guitar will need to be set up when you complete the project (see Torres Engineering "Perfect Guitar #2" for setup tricks).

BUILDING AN AMPLIFIER KIT.

We have a lot of kits to modify amplifiers, either simple, or quite involved, and complete kits to make an entire tube amp.

The range of tools needed varies depending on the type of project.

Simple amp mods will require getting the amp apart (screwdrivers), being able to find parts, and replace them (soldering).

Usually for kits less than $75.00 this is all that is required, with the exception of the Bias mod for the Blues DeVille amps. You need to be able to drill two holes in the metal chassis for that kit installation.

More involved kits (Super Texan for your reissue Fender for example) will require more tools and tool knowledge. Besides soldering assembly and disassembly, you may need to drill holes and mount hardware requiring a power hand drill and appropriate bits.

When you are working with metal, other tools are handy, such as round and flat files, grinders, and a metal punch (if you need to add tubes to a chassis) and a good work table to do everything neatly.

Kit building is a great hobby, and a very relaxing, enjoyable pastime. A good craftsman enjoys and take pride in his tools as well as his work. Just like your guitar is a tool for music, you hobby or hand tools are tools to make the musical instruments to make that music.
