Building and modifying tube amps has become a popular hobby (and occupation) among musicians in the last 10 years.
"Inside Tube Amps" by Dan Torres as well as other books have opened the doorway to a lot of creativity, interesting new concepts and ideas.
But you may be looking for some more esoteric info - things not really covered in any book - LOW NOISE BUILDING TECHNIQUES.
Tubes have some inherent noise going on, just the fact that they use AC for the heaters/filaments is a problem.
Put that together with stepped up very high voltage AC going into the rectifier and minimal power supply smoothing and we are actually used to a fair degree of low level hum and buzz - if you'd like to get rid of it - check out this new technology package from Torres Engineering.
LETS GET QUIET includes several relatively high tech, but easy to install noise reduction methods for tube amplifiers. It also includes the parts for all the different tricks and modifications.
Nothing affect the sound or tone of the amp (unless you like excess noise), and you can install several on the same amp.
Included are:
A pre-rectifier AC snubber circuit.
Pumping up the power supply for less DC ripple (hundreds of times less!)
Rectifier tube protection.
Full rebuild of a solid state rectifier
DC filaments for push pull and single ended amps
Hum balance control for all amps
and an improved AC filament wiring.
The kit includes all the parts plus illustrated and written instructions.
If you have SOME experience building or moding an amp, these tricks, techniques and this technology will open up lots of new doors for you and your amp projects.
This kit requires some experience as it is not specific to any particular amp, but applicable to ALL of them. - It will take some visualizing to apply to some amps, but will be worth it.
